In general, Sicilians don't speak foreign languages although, slowly, the younger generation are making up for this with more language lessons at school and a more cosmopolitan view of life.
Often, tourists find it difficult to talk to the people from here, especially adults or older people, who prefer their Sicilian dialect to European languages!
However, the smiles and natural warmth of the Sicilian people are a language in themselves and more than make up for this shortcoming.
