Although almost totally destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1908, Messina still managed to retain some traces of its past, such as ornate fountains and buildings that recall the Spanish domination.
Here, thanks to the advice given by our drivers, you can visit on foot the small and pleasant historical center, a main shopping area full of elegant shops, and the attractive Cathedral square, with its characteristically bell tower - the biggest mechanical and astronomical clock in the world. After that, we will drive up into the hills for a last, magical look across the Straits.
After the visit to Messina, lasting about two hours, we will drive for about an hour and half to Cefalu along the Tyrrhenian sea where you can admire the beautiful Aeolian Islands.
You will visit, by walking by yourself and per our suggestion, the charming fishing town of Cefalu with its medieval pebble-stone streets, the old public òlavatory, which is still functioning, and the outstanding most important monument in town, the Arab-Norman Cathedral which was the burial place of Roger II and his family.,This monument shows a very interesting combination of different styles: Arabic, Byzantine, Romanesque and Baroque.
The façade of the main church is flanked by two massive bell-towers and preceded by a porch from the 15th century. Inside, we admire the Christ Pantocrator made with the mosaic technique.
Cefalu is also famous for its beautiful beaches where during the summer you could enjoy a refreshing splash.
After the visit to Cefalu ', in the afternoon, we will take you back to Palermo to your hotel.
