Polifemo and faraglioni

Homer’s Odyssey tells the story of the Cyclops Polifemo, the one-eyed giant who lived in a cave on Etna who, blinded by Ulysses, hurled great masses of lava stone at his boat when he was trying to escape with his friends.
These huge lava rocks, nowadays called “Faraglioni”, can be seen from Acitrezza, a small fishing village in the district of Acicastello, a few kilometres from Catania.
Their curious shape recalls this ancient myth. Today this area is also a beautiful nature reserve, with a sea-bed of dark lava stone which is home to lots of multi-coloured fish. Acitrezza is also the place where, in the 19th century, the Sicilian writer Giovanni Verga set his novel “I Malavoglia”, the story of a family of fishermen who struggled against nature to survive.
